About the Owner, John Roumanis

John Roumanis, the owner and founder of Mediterrano, is a proven restaurateur and leader in the hospitality industry. As a boy in Greece, John didn’t dream of becoming a restaurateur. His interest in the industry was piqued when he worked in restaurants while attending college in Ann Arbor. After college, John moved to California to work for the Hyatt Corporation as a bartender. Soon, he had decided to turn his interest in the business into a career. His new-found passion for the industry and uncommon dedication to his work led to unprecedented success. At age 24, he was promoted to Assistant Food and Beverage Manager at the Hyatt–the youngest ever in the history of the company. John’s continued hard work resulted in his promotion to Food and Beverage Manager.

Not satisfied, John began to formulate ideas for his own restaurant; one which would provide each guest with a superior dining experience and would reflect his own Mediterranean heritage. In late November of 1995, he opened Mediterrano, which quickly became a top dining destination in Ann Arbor. Since its debut, Mediterrano has won accolades from both Ann Arbor and Detroit reviewers, and amassed a loyal and enthusiastic clientele.

Today, as well as overseeing the Ann Arbor Mediterrano, John supervises the importation of Mediterrano Extra Virgin Olive Oil directly from his hometown in Greece. He looks forward to inviting even more guests to taste the exciting flavors of the Mediterranean coast while enjoying the exacting quality which Ann Arbor patrons have learned to expect from Mediterrano.
